Remembering Onyx
Onyx had this incredible way of living life fully, no matter his age. From his younger days when he was a bundle of pure terrier energy to his golden years when comfort became everything, he showed us what it meant to embrace each moment with enthusiasm. That black coat and bright spirit made him unforgettable—a mixed breed with the heart of a much larger dog and the curiosity of a true explorer. When he saw us reach for his collar and leash, excitement would surge through his whole body, making it nearly impossible to get him ready for walks. Those walks were his kingdom, a chance to chase squirrels, investigate every corner, and remind us that adventure was always just around the corner.
As Onyx settled into his later years, his priorities shifted beautifully. Sleep and food became his greatest joys, and he pursued both with the same determination he'd once used to burrow under the deck and bark at every creature that dared pass by. He claimed the center of our bed as his rightful place, though he couldn't resist sneaking onto the couch when he thought no one was looking. His love of food was legendary—he'd stand sentinel by the cabinet, begging for treats with those hopeful eyes, and he'd never quite accept that his kibble was already gone. Even his stubbornness about pain medicine showed his personality; he'd spit it out the moment he thought we weren't paying attention, as if he could outsmart the very thing meant to help him.
What made Onyx truly brave was how he never let arthritis stop him from being where he needed to be. Those stairs were a challenge, but climbing them meant being near us, and that was worth every aching joint. He always knew when we were leaving—the moment we changed out of our pajamas, sadness would wash over his face, a silent plea not to go. For sixteen years, Onyx filled our home with mischief, loyalty, and unconditional love. He was more than a pet; he was family, a constant companion who taught us that the best life is one lived with enthusiasm, comfort, and devotion to those you love.
